Chacos vs. Reefs: Which Sandals Hold Up Better?

There’s nothing like a good pair of sandals. I’ve tried all the fads, the dupes, and I still come back to a trendy sandal. But before it was trendy, my friends, it was legit. Once in a while fashion actually aligns with practicality. As a transplanted Colorado girl, I’m happy to announce it is in fact Chacos.

Don’t get upset with such a generalization. I know it can look poor; and even more embarrassing and true to my nature, I never actually owned a pair of Chacos for the almost two decades I lived there.

Much like the Jeep vehicle’s design, it was made to make people feel like off roading groupies. Regardless if the vehicle was used outside of carpool, it didn’t matter. They had the look of outdoors.

Adventure seekers also transplanted the Chaco shoe for similar hiker vibes. Whether or not you use either for the intended design purposes of climbing mountains or chasing kids at the park, it’s still a great shoe.

I bought my first pair four years ago and wore them all year long. My in-laws can attest to it; even a foot of snow outside, I wore those everywhere. Great support, great quality, waterproof, easy to clean—and literally match anything if you pick a black base.

Some might scrunch their face at the price; but as a minimalist and someone who will always pick quality over quantity…this shoe will blow your socks off. Literally.

Now, the only bummer about the shoe is no matter how good…it cannot prevent foot growth with two pregnancies. I swelled faster than a yeast roll of Grandma’s and there was no return. Sadly, I needed a new pair of sandals. So, last summer I tried Reefs by a recommendation of someone who gave great reviews.

People swore by the shoe, but unfortunately it wasn’t the same as a Chaco. Equally comfortable and supportive could be shared; but the quality and the wear and tear for everyday wear or for a hike was a no go.

I will say as a dressy version of an outdoor sandal, I really did enjoy it. I would absolutely still wear it for dressy occasions. But actual outdoor and five kid chasing usage over and over again, it failed. The Velcro came off the heels. For a similar price as the Chaco, it didn’t stand a chance.

I’ll probably wear sandals until my feet won’t let me anymore. I never thought I’d have such an opinion on shoes with it snowing outside, but there’s a first time for everything.

Isn’t it funny how we all have that one thing we swear is the best? What’s something you use or wear that you wouldn’t live without?
