Sunday mornings in our house sometimes look a little unconventional. Instead of the latest streaming show, my kids and I recently found ourselves watching McGee and Me, a Focus on the Family series from the early nineties. Though the animation may look dated, there’s nothing like a classic.
In one episode, the message was simple: whatever we do for others, we do as unto Christ. Whether that’s offering a kind word, extending forgiveness, or speaking a harsh word, it’s not just about the person in front of us—it’s about our relationship with Him. When we speak ugly, we speak ugly to Him. And the opposite is also true when we are thankful and filled with joy. As Colossians 3:23 reminds us, Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”
That truth started to play out in my mind in the most ordinary of ways. Jesus is the reason a mom gets up early to make cinnamon rolls before school. Jesus is the reason we take a deep breath before reacting and instead choose to treat others the way we would want to be treated (Luke 6:31). Jesus is the reason we extend grace, even when it feels undeserved. He is the reason we can find quiet joy in folding laundry, cooking meals, or running errands that no one else notices.
These hidden acts of service don’t go unseen. Matthew 25:40 reminds us, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” Even the smallest gestures, done in love, matter to God. And when no one else applauds, He still sees.
What struck me most is how a simple children’s show captured a truth so relevant for every stage of life: the unseen places of faithfulness are often the places where God shines the brightest.
Because what we do for others, we ultimately do for Him.
