The Decline of Christ in Christmas Celebrations

With the name of Christ within the upcoming celebration of Christmas one would think it would be a big Christian holiday to American society; but according to Pew Research the opposite appears to be happening. Although 90% of Americans and 95% of Christians celebrate Christmas having Christ at the center of it has continues to dwindle.

The role of religion in Christmas celebrations appears to be declining. Today, 46% of Americans say they celebrate Christmas as primarily a religious (rather than cultural) holiday, down from 51% who said this in 2013, with Millennial less likely than other adults to say they celebrate Christmas in a religious way,” stated Pew Researchers.

Many of our older generations and community members grew up going to church and serving the communities around Christmas time. Even those with opposing views celebrated and acknowledged the existence of Christ. Secular movies included Christmas carols and there was a broad acceptance of the holiday. However, times seem to be changing and those Christians who want to continue to spread the news of the Gospel are faced with a new challenge. Bringing Christ back into Christmas is a new mission field for those around us.

“ A majority of U.S. adults (56%) also say religious aspects of Christmas are emphasized less in American society today than in the past, though relatively few are bothered by this trend,” stated Pew.

Ways community members can continue to support Christ in Christmas ranges from supporting local pastors, to giving away Bibles, praying for community members, and being generous with their time and finances. In a world where Christmas has always been about Christ, these newer statistical developments will challenge believers everywhere to walk the walk of Christianity in action above just words. Having a Merry Christmas has now taken on a new role.
