Our local Walmart is stepping up with an upgrade that will benefit not just Goodland but the surrounding communities who count on it.
Walmart corporate has announced that several of their store brand foods will now be made without artificial dyes and additives. That means the shelves at our Walmart will soon hold healthier versions of everyday favorites under brands like Great Value, Marketside, Freshness Guaranteed, and Bettergoods.
Some of the additives being removed include preservatives like potassium nitrate and potassium bisulfate. Diving into some research about these two specific ingredients, they have have long been questioned for their impact on health. A recent survey by the International Food Information Council concluded that nearly 65% of shoppers say they actively read food labels to avoid artificial ingredients. And part of that impact is in our very own neck of the woods. This behavior of checking labels also matches a growing trend in the food industry.
A study from Statista shows that the U.S. natural and organic food market has been growing at about 8% each year, as more families want real food that fuels health rather than chips away at it. Walmart has stated that this step is part of its larger goal to be more transparent about what goes into its private brands.
For Goodland specifically this means more than just an update on the shelves. Our Walmart is the nearest option for healthier groceries for families across several counties
who often drive a couple hours to shop here.
That means this healthier change isn’t only about cleaner labels, it creates better access to better food for our rural families who don’t always have the luxury of dozens of grocery choices.
Healthier kids in Northwest Kansas will be a result of a simple ingredient change. Less addictive additives and more real food. That sounds like a good change for Goodland!
