Doritos Goes Clean: Addressing Consumer Concerns

PepsiCo, the parent company of Doritos, announced mid October 2025 it is removing several controversial ingredients from its popular snack line—ingredients that have been linked to potential cancer risks in scientific studies.

According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), some of the artificial colors and preservatives used in snack foods, including certain red and yellow dyes, have been associated with increased cancer risk and behavioral issues in children. The Food and Drug Administration still allows these additives in limited amounts, but consumer pressure and growing awareness have pushed many companies toward reformulation.

While the move is being celebrated by health advocates, it also raises questions about why the changes are only happening now. A 2023 Statista survey found that 61% of U.S. consumers are more likely to purchase products labeled as “free from artificial ingredients,” signaling a shift in public demand that companies can no longer ignore.

PepsiCo stated that the reformulation aims to provide a “cleaner ingredient list” and better align with consumer expectations. However, the company has faced criticism for not prioritizing consumer health sooner, as many of these additives have been under scrutiny for decades.

As Doritos prepares to debut its new formula later this year, consumers are left wondering—if these ingredients weren’t safe yesterday, what took so long to change them today?
