Finding Love in Mundane Moments

I had chores to get done, errands to check off, and I had already stepped it up with a hot breakfast today.
Frozen cinnamon rolls in the oven might not sound like much, but for me, that was worthy of an applause. I don’t bake homemade rolls well,
so this was four-star worthy.

And I’ll be honest…I felt like wife of the year! Before my husband went to work, I reminded him why I was his favorite and only woman in the world, sending him off with a little extra joy tucked into his day.

By 9 a.m., I felt like I had already won. The invisible gold star sticker was proudly self-placed on my sweatshirt.

But then came my three-year-old. He wanted out of the house.

It was too chilly to walk, and I was met with a choice. Stay in the comfort of my planned-out day, or cancel my beautifully curated grocery pick-up order and trade it for the “old fashioned” haul—with him and his sister in tow.

I could have said no. They have a good life. They’re loved. They’re cared for. But today felt different. Today I decided to go the extra mile.

So we loaded up the car. Dropped cinnamon rolls at Daddy’s office. Took a deep breath. And hit the aisles. We even bought a toy we didn’t need, picked up the drinks for women’s group, and yes—missed something I’ll have to wait until another day to get.

Oh well. Mundane motherhood will wait. Because today wasn’t a normal Thursday. Today was the kind of day when love shows up in the small ways.

Jesus said in Matthew 5:41, “If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two.” Some days, that second mile looks like sacrificing time, convenience, or efficiency for the sake of love.

Colossians 3:23 reminds us, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” Even cinnamon rolls and canceled pick-up orders can be holy work when done with love.

And Proverbs 31:28 speaks of a mother’s reward: “Her children rise up and call her blessed.” Not because everything was perfect, but because she chose presence over perfection.

That’s the mom I chose to be today…the frozen cinnamon roll, grocery cart pushing mom. I guess I can have that date with the laundry basket tomorrow (it’s always a standing one, right!?)
