You and I were not safe.
We had to leave quietly outside the gate.
I could not leave for me, but you…
You deserved a chance at life— you deserved something new.
We prayed every night.
That your future daddy would show up in the light.
I was a single mom working— and we lived small.
We were happy, but still no one to throw you a baseball.
We waited and waited and waited some more.
Till one day the LORD opened the door.
We got married.
He became your dad.
We went to court a few years later.
And were so very frightened and sad.
It took a fight to keep you close.
We wanted you safe and in our arms the most.
We eventually won the fight!
Crying and rejoicing with great delight.
You have a dad now, someone to hold you.
You can have a different future, someone to mold you.
A chance to grow.
A chance to be bold.
A chance to love.
A chance to be free.
Generations changed.
Grace made a way.
Oh how much my daddy must love me!
He came into our worldly lane, claimed you as His own son…
And said seal the deal by giving him my last name— He’s the one.
Ephesians 1:5 (New International Version)
