THE CROWN
The suspense was building. Finally, George Hamilton announced, “Miss Universe 1997 is… Miss USA; Brooke Lee!” The audience erupted in celebration. The 1996 Miss Universe thrust a bouquet of roses into her arms and put the towering sparkly crown on her head. The new Miss Universe walked down the stage crying, waving, and smiling.
I looked at my sister and asked, “If you won a crown for something, would you wear it every day?”
Immediately, she said “Yes!”
We both agreed, if we won a crown for any reason, we would wear it everywhere: to work, to the grocery store, to vacuum our house, even to scrub the bathtub.
I want a tall, sparkly crown.
I often wonder if there is a job where I could wear a crown all the time. There are chocolate testers and toy testers; I could be a crown tester. I could test it with different hair styles, different outfits, in every kind of weather, I could do that job.
Queen Victoria had a crown-wearing job as England’s longest reigning monarch in history, reigning 63 years and seven months; that is until the current Queen Elizabeth II who, as of 2015, is now the longest reigning monarch in British history.
Queen Victoria was known for her high morals and her love of Jesus. In fact, she prayed that Jesus would return during her reign so she could fall to her face, remove the crown from her head, and lay it at His feet. If I had the most beautiful expensive crown with the most sparkly precious jewels, would I lay it at the feet of Jesus?
The 24 elders in Revelation chapter 4 fell before Jesus, who was seated on the throne, and worshiped Him. They cast their crowns before the throne saying, “Worthy are You, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for You created all things, by Your will they existed and were created.”
Jesus had a crown, a heavenly crown, but He set it aside. He came to earth and picked up a crown of thorns for us sinners. Surely, I could lay my measly silly crown at His feet. All my accomplishments, all of my “glory”, and all of my worldly belongings, no matter how expensive or precious, are nothing compared to Jesus, they do not measure up to the King of kings and I am not worthy to wear any crown in His presence.
