Anyone who has known our Graham for any length of time, knows candy and chocolate are his favorite things to eat. He’s even made chocolate pudding angels on our kitchen floor.

Although a darling little boy, sometimes his craving for sweets can get the best of him. He becomes obsessed with wanting to eat, eat, and eat chocolate! With a gentle motherly reminder, I have on multiple occasions needed to set healthy boundaries with his consumption of the delicious chocolates.
After sitting in the study reminiscing, I realized that I too had a craving for sweets that was uncontainable. But beyond just candy, sometimes I craved things right out of their priorities.
That was warm, humble pie.
There was nothing inherently wrong with eating chocolate, scrolling social media time, or working on a project. They were all good things– but in the wrong season, or priority, it would cause tummies and heart aches.
We were designed to crave the LORD and enjoy the best things that He made; but it causes stress without the bless when we choose to live our lives outside of His perfect order.
What is something in your life that needs to change positioning from wrong to right? Maybe it is sweet intakes, maybe it is brain clutter, or even social media time.
The best place to look for answers is always in the Good Book– and The LORD states it clearly all over with wisdom on the topics of cravings, self-control, and right priorities:
Ecclesiastes 3:1 (NIV)
A Time for Everything
There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens:
Proverbs 25:16-17(MSG)
A Person Without Self-Control
When you’re given a box of candy, don’t gulp it all down;
eat too much chocolate and you’ll make yourself sick;
And when you find a friend, don’t outwear your welcome;
show up at all hours and he’ll soon get fed up.
1 Peter 2:2 (ESV)
Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation—
1 Corinthians 6:12 (ESV)
“All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything.
Beating worldly cravings is hard… we are like children in so many ways even as grown adults; but we can grow and become wiser by spending time in the LORD’s word every day. We can take His Word further by be practical in implementing healthy boundaries and accountabilities to overcome our individual, convicting habits.
He loves us too much to leave us where we are at– let’s bloom and grow together!

Do you need some practical resources to help with cravings in your own life? We’ve got some recommended tools to help:
- Lysa Terkeurst wrote two books that talk about food cravings that are an amazing resource: I’ll Start Again Monday and Made to Crave.
- Another way that is helpful for some people is a habit tracker journal.
- Replacing one habit with another is also beneficial! Maybe instead of scrolling on social media again today, you choose to spend it coloring an adult Bible verse coloring book?
- Do you enjoy our devotions? Find more in our first book, Blooming Grace.
As we get closer to Graham’s birthday, we wanted to share some of our favorite Russel Stover chocolates with you than can be savored in moderation! You can enjoy them with your family or even send them as a gift with flowers to someone for the upcoming holidays!
